A more important statistic, however, is that of every 10 combatants who die from battle injuries, 9 die on the battlefield (i.e., are killed in action) and never make it to the field hospital (Bellamy, 1998). Although there has been tremendous variation in this number since World War II (depending on the campaign), this has been the mean mortality rate for all U.S. Historically, 20 percent of all injured combatants die in battle.
